Please Help an Expat lost in Ziggo !!!

Hi to all

new to your beautiful country and with a new Ziggo All in One bundle !!!

As an expat I want to watch Netflix and some US shows on TV and my DNS service from Unotelly requires that I provide their UnoDNS primary and secondary DNS so I can log onto their Netflix private platform. (I avoid VPN because is too slow).

Now, the modem that came with Ziggo is a UBEE EVW3200, but somehow I can't manage to enter my own DNS through my browser

Even funnier, the super Cisco interactive decoder that came with the bundle has pretty much everything deactivated (USB port, wireless, LAN) so no much luck from there.

Is there any way around with the DNS settings ?

Where do you need to set your DNS settings ?
In your computer ? Or do you have a IPTV receiver ?

Normally when you use automatic IP, also the DNS servers are automatically set by the DHCP server. In this case the DNS servers of Ziggo are default used, but for example in Windows you can set DNS manually too. Where and how depends on your Windows version. Same for other equipment, usually it is possible to enter a manual DNS server. So there is no need to do it in the modem/router if that is not possible.

But are you sure that you can view US channels here in Europe? Usually they block this from the US based on the ip-adress. In that case you need to use VPN so the provider thinks that you are in the USA.
 
@Cees: I assume he needs to use his DNS service exactly to circumvent the restrictions to watch Netflix and US TV shows from a Dutch IP address.....
Just Google on UnoTelly. Sounds like a great service BTW, might want to check it out to see US content.

In my router I can set an alternative DNS, but no clue with the modem/router of Ziggo as I luckily don't have one.

You could buy a proper router instead and ask the Ziggo help desk to put the modem in bridge mode, that would probably give you a lot of additional options.

Alternatively, you can watch US TV shows like most Ziggo users do, download the shows via Usenet, for example using SABNzbd and Sickbeard, using a proper Usenet payserver.
In the Netherlands, downloading from what in the US would be illegal sources, is perfectly legal :mrgreen:

This is not possible with the EVW3200.

If you do not want to set the DNS servers in you're seperate devices (which sometime is not possible) this is the only solution.

Hi CeeS

want to set the DNS servers on the ziggo router, but I think this is not possible. DNS servers are now the alternative to VPN servers to unblock US channels. They are faster and cheaper than VPN.

Question remains: is the ziggo modem custom made and restricted like the cisco interactive decoder?

Thanks dude, you got my point! UnoTelly type of platforms are the best and cheap. VPN is just too dump expensive and unreliable, not to mention slow. Problem is my new tv is not happy with DNS changes. The ziggo modem aint much help either, guess I may need to buy me a ps3.

Not quite familiar with usenet. I will google it

are you saying EVW3200 doesn't allow you to input DNS servers? Why are they doing this ?

instead of bridging more crap to my existing crap do you thing that a dutch ps3 would allow me to configure the DNS servers and feed my TV directly? With wireless routing, games, blue ra,y and 320gigs in may not sound as a bad a deal for 200 euro. What do you think?

Functionality of this router is kept very simple as to not confuse non advanced users and the help desk is not flooded with requests for help.
But bridging is possible and then buying a proper router is I think the way to go.

On a PS3: own one, but never tried feeding it a different DNS, so no experience there. But of course you can get those BluRays from Usenet as well.... :mrgreen:

As the router is under support of Ziggo they want to keep control over it.
I do not know if a PS3 would be a solution, I do not own one so I do not know if you can change the used dns servers and how it will function as a mediaplayer. For a mediaplayer it seems to me a pretty costly option, but ok, you can do more things with it.
 
I think the easiest solution would be bridging. Yep, you got to buy a router, but it'll work perfectly. I use my router as DHCP-server and have alternative DNS-servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 - the Google DNS-servers) in use. Works flawlessly!

I've never tried Netflix or their designated DNS-servers, but I see no problem why it wouldn't work. Otherwise, ask to use a friend's router to check.
