New modem = worse service

I've recently had my modem replaced by Chello (their choice not mine  :-\ ) and the service is 10 x worse than it used to be. The new modem (Thomson) gives me reasonable download rates (200kb/sec) but I'm getting about 5kb/sec up. I also get the feeling that they are using some sort of caching which breaks many real-time applications.

I've had enough and am, basically, going to switch to ADSL (we've had this discussion before :) ) so am looking for a good provider - I've looked at xs4all who seem to have a good reputation, anyone got any others they could recommend?

Thanks

SC

I think xs4all is pretty good too, or you should take wanadoo (but most of the time wanadoo is more expensive, while you get the same service)
And i've never heard any problems about those 2, so I think you'll enjoy their service :)
But wait for someone else to reply, maybe someone else knows some problems with the service from xs4all or wanadoo.

XS4all uses ADSL lines connected by "KPN Telecom" these lines are a little more expensive than the ADSL provided by bbNed. You have to look which ADSL providers there are in your area.

For "Connected by KPN"you are best off with XS4ALL
For "bbNed" i think Demon is the best.

You should check:
* Your network interface card should be at 10Mbut half-duplex
* Look at http://192.168.100.1 This is the status page of the Thomson, look at SNR, if this is lower then 30 dB: call the helpdesk, you have a signal problem.

Sweet diags page :D

Forward Path: Return Path:
Signal Acquired at 634.750 MHz Connection: Acquired
SNR: 33.0 dB Frequency: 35.1 MHz
Received Signal Strength: -1.0 dBmV Power Level: 55.0 dBmV
Micro-Reflections: 33 dBc Channel ID: 3
Modulation: 64 QAM Modulation: QPSK

The SNR flicks between 30,32 and 33

On the main page it also suggests that the ethernet is 100Base-T !

global network conclusion:
connected by KPN = the slowest way of adsl connections.
connected by BabyXl = best price/speed offers also the fast way of adsl
connected by BBnet = most expensive one , but the fastest and most reliable one.

so if you found a provider that is your choice, then look what network it uses (kpn/babyXl/bbnet) it depends on the telephone-central in your neighborhood (where your phoneline is connected to)

link to providers supported by BBnet network: https://www.bbned.nl/partners/consumenten.shtml
link to providers supported by tiscali wholesale (like BabyXL network)
https://www.tiscali-wholesale.nl/klanten.asp

good luck with making a choice. everybody want his own connection specification , so there is not really a best adsl provider.
There are good ones , but it's depending on what you wanna do with your www connection. And what you wanna pay 4 it.

SNR should be more stable.
Your signal strength is way to low, should be around 12 mV. Call the chello helpdesk.
You should configure your network card to 10Mbit half-duplex, 100 Mbit is nonsense and you don't know what the duplex negotiantion is doing.

connected by KPN = the slowest way of adsl connections.
- But most stable one and the highest covering rate !!

connected by BabyXl = best price/speed offers also the fast way of adsl
- But very low covering rate

connected by BBnet = most expensive one , but the fastest and most reliable one
- Fastest but NOT most relialble (that is absolutely KPN) and also NOT the expensive one for high speed DSL, bbned offers cheap 8/1mbit DSL. The service of BBned itself is I think of the worst of all tree.
(I work for DSL provider myself, we offer KPN and BBned lines, KPN as a lot better technical support as bbned)
