Dear Sir/ Madam,
As a subscriber to both Film1 and Sport1, via UPC Digital, I would very much like to know when you are planning to start broadcasting films in anamorphic widescreen? Compared to many other European film channels, Sky Movies for example, you are now lagging years behind with your compulsive addiction to the dreadful 4:3 letterbox and 4:3 Pan & Scan formats. As you must surely be aware most digital subscribers already have widescreen televisions and all digital decoders can deal with all formats by setting them correctly. Watching any film on all Film1 is simply a dreadful experience if one has a widescreen television. I do not consider a picture the size of a postcard DVD quality, in any way, shape or form. Having to zoom into to fill the screen is not an option, thanks to the ridiculous way you place the subtitles in the black bands.
From what I’ve already seen of it, Film1 is simply Canal+ with new, bigger and more annoying DOG’s (Digital On-screen Graphics/ logos) on the screen and nothing broadcast in anamorphic widescreen. Even the programming is the same. The chance has been missed by yourselves to introduce at least one, decent anamorphic channel to the Dutch digital landscape. Very, very sad, yet highly predictable from a company that seems to have no understanding of how films in the 21st century can and should be broadcast.
Perhaps it’s a Dutch habit to lag behind in all forms of 21st century digital broadcasting, after all you’ve only had TV since 1953, a full 20 years later than Great Britain. Are we to wait another 20 years for your little film channel to introduce anamorphic widescreen and catch up with the rest of the planet? Wake up and smell the coffee Chellomedia, films broadcast in 4:3 format, unless that is the original aspect ratio, are no longer what subscribers expect from a digital film channel. Please drag yourselves up to the proper standards of 21st century broadcasting and give us, your subscribers, films in the proper aspect ratio and in anamorphic 16
digital widescreen.
Regards,
